Rare and beautiful antique northern Italian wellhead hand-carved in Italian Istrian stone with a procession of eight young putti “Atlantes”, carved in high relief, standing between architectural elements and swags. “Atlantes”, similar to caryatids, symbolize vigilant guardians of the home, and are male figures commonly used as columns, pilasters, or as anchors to a frieze. This architectural term is used in decoration. The octagonal top of the wellhead carved with dentil molding above a decorative frieze. Circa 1870.
