Important Scottish Garnkirk stoneware neoclassical-style urn on stand, circa 1850. The urn foot and paneled stepped base pedestal stamped Garnkirk. Nicely weathered with crisp surface. Good antique condition.
This urn was exhibited at London's Great Exhibition of 1851, and is illustrated in the Garnkirk catalogue as "The Vase of All Nations". It depicts queen Victoria seated resplendently with sceptre and orb surrounded by figures representing Africa, the orient and North America.
The Scottish-based Garnkirk Fire-Clay Works, was established by the Sprot family. Although the firm was already in business at an earlier date, by 1833 it was already advertising "ornamental vases after the antique", and became preeminent around 1850. The company is recorded as exhibiting at the 1851 Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London. In 1901 it went out of business.
