Rare antique Japanese Kasuga-style lantern

Rare matching pair of Japanese Gorinto (5-ringed Stupa)
AA8651

Rare matching pair of Japanese Gorinto (5-ringed Stupa), hand-sculpted from a sedimentary stone composed of volcanic ash. Early- to mid-Edo period. Circa 1750. Very minor losses. Light lichen accumulation.

Identical in terms of stone type and sculpting technique and differing only slightly in dimensional and stylistic terms, these two Gorinto clearly form a matching pair. This pair was originally housed in a stone Hokora, or protective hut, located in an isolated region of Nagano prefecture, which fact explains the excellent condition and relative absence of lichen accumulation.

GORINTO ON THE LEFT HEIGH:   11¼ Inches
GORINTO ON THE RIGHT HEIGH:   11 Inches
Stone Ranto Stupa comprising three elements
AA8652

Stone Ranto Stupa comprising three elements, each element original to the ensemble and the three elements together forming a complete Stupa. Dated to Meiwa 4 (1767), a mid-Edo period piece. Minor flaking. Good lichen accumulation.

Referred to in the literature as a Muhoto but commonly called a Ranto (lit. Egg Stupa, an obvious reference to this Stupa's form), this distinctive Stupa style originated in china and arrived in Japan with the introduction of Zen (Ch'an) Buddhism at the opening of the Kamakura period (1192–1333).

OVERALL HEIGHT:   18½ Inches
