S14
Important English lead lion and lioness. The original lions were carved in stone for Lord Burlington in 1738 and can be seen at Chiswick House, England. John Cheere, who took over the Van Nost Yard in 1737, made several full size copies in lead during the third quarter of the 18th century, of which five pairs are still extant. The creators of these magnificent lions were given permission to take moulds to create exact replicas. Photograph of lioness available.
